Motorcycle Ride from Pendleton OR to Mule Shoe Recreation Area - 20230710

A playlist of all of the videos from the ride of 2023-07-10 to 2023-07-13. The playlist consists of Slow TV videos. The video of the ride for this day is here. The Invisibilia podcast discussed Norwegian 'Slow TV'.

Going west out of Pendleton took me immediately to I-84. A good portion of I-84 is along the river and a nice view, but immediately I ran into the wind and wind farms. This was for the entire ride along that highway. Gas mileage dwent from 37 to 42 MPG down to 30 MPG. I stopped for gas in Arlington and proceeded south towards John Day. This is the part of the ride where monitoring your gas gage is important, between Arlington and Fossil Oregon (57 miles) there are no gas stations, likewise between Spray Oregon and Dayville Oregon (97 miles with a stop at Painted Hills) there are no gas stations, so add that into your trip plans. The gas in Fossil and Spray are 87 Octane, usable but lower than what most motorcycles SHOULD run on. You could add Octane Booster if you need to, considering the disadvantages I would rather not take a chance and mess up my engine. I am only running a tank or two on lower octane gas. The ride going south (as you can see in this video) was wide open prairie / plains. This is where the Oregon Trail crossed through Oregon. Just driving down State Route 19 this is the kind of view you get:

Continued over to the first of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monuments units, the Clarno Unit. The three are Clarno Unit, Painted Hills Unit and Sheep Rock Unit. The Clarno Unit has a short 'trail of fossils' hike where they tell you about the different layers of sediment and how mant millions of years ago each layer was creayed:

And a view of the surrounding rocks. I enjoyed just sitting and absorbing the beauty, but I like semi-arid lands:

And again the motorcycle in its resting state:

The final stop was the Mule Shoe Recreation Area, where I would spend the night camping.Very peaceful, nice views of the river. Nobody at all except some U.S. Forest Service firefighters until 8:30 PM, then a couple of vehicles pulled in, made some noise then quieted down. When the sun was fully down looked up and saw the Milky Way, there was NO light from any nearby cities. Whenever I see the Milky Way I think it is clouds in the sky then I remember that there WERE no clouds. Slept well:
